Sedan han flyttat till Chicago kom basen att bli hans huvudinstrument under en stor del av 1960-talet. Men hans medverkan som munspelare p\u00e5 en uppm\u00e4rksammad Earl Hooker-lp 1968 f\u00f6ljdes \u00e5ret d\u00e4rp\u00e5 av den egna \u201dCarey Bell\u2019s Blues Harp\u201d och turn\u00e9 med Am. Folk Blues Festival i Europa.
